FLIGHT

Advent Calendar ++ Pic 1:
The Superman Cape


Superman's cape is allegedly made from the sheets found in his spaceship. Ma Kent took this potential 'Linus Blanket' and made it the most stand-out aspect of the costume (aside from the outside underpants!).

For the cape does'nt make Kal-el himself fly, we identify with this peice of wind flapping material as an object of flight. The cape is the finishing garnish on Superman's costume, the object you dare not tug on.

A cape acts very much like a flag, a banner of sorts. When Superman takes flight, citizens know it isn't just a bird or a plane souring in to save the day.

The cape as a mark of importance has been adopted by The Martian Manhunter, Red Tornado, Captain Marvel and so forth. It has also been adopted for villainy, but when it comes to the cloth - its most recognised for crimebusting. Its useage being most iconically used by the last son of Krypton...
